I have been thinking a lot about one of my favourite places. Recently, I was helping my dad sort through old books in his basement and I came across a large map (four feet by three feet) of Thunder Bay District, mounted on thin foam board and filed away behind a bookcase. It was published in 1974 by the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources and covers a vast area from Lake Superior to north of the Albany River and from Pukaskwa National Park to Quetico Provincial Park. The endless network of waterways winding through boreal forest captured in great detail on this map offers perhaps the best wilderness canoeing in the world.

I'm an adventure sports enthusiast in general and can't get away from the thrill and excitement of racing and competing. I'm always trying to find more time to go training, whether it be orienteering, paddling, biking and the list goes on.

I want swimming to b my sport for life. I started in a competitive program at the age of 5 after almost drowning as a child and have been swimming ever since. Of late I have been involved in open water swimming, triathlons and whitewater kayaking.

Imagine a wilderness canoe experience in the 1950’s. How different would it be? There would be more wilderness to experience, for sure. You would probably be paddling a fragile cedar strip canoe loaded with a heavy canvas tent and steel poles. Your wanigan would be loaded near the centre of the canoe due to its weight. We will go in 3-5 small caves at 2 or 3 different locations. The day usually last 5-6 hours. You will walk a few kilometers to get to some of the caves. In the caves, you will crawl, belly crawl, go through small spaces and squeezes, and do some climbing. You will get dirty, scraped, and most likely a little scared and bruised (and you will love it). Note: these are not walking caves.

Before I concluded the purchase of my newest kevlar canoe with ash gunwhales, seats and yoke, the salesperson felt obliged to point out that the wood requires annual maintenance in the form of cleaning, sanding and oiling and that I should consider this responsibility carefully. Good advice. Vinyl trim packages are maintenance free and usually [...]
