Kensington Market is one of the city’s oldest and most famous neighbourhoods, and in November 2006, it became a National Historic Site.  The Market is great for finding vintage clothes, cheap deals on bulk food and other unique items not found anywhere else in the city.  The area of Kensington Market is pretty much from College Street to the North to Dundas Street to the South and across to Spadina to the East. The area is family friendly and always has something interesting going on during all seasons.  Here are the top picks for Kensington Market.

The Festival of Lights: Each year during the winter solstice Kensington Market becomes alive with street performers including drum players, fire breathers and large puppet performers. The festival also has a large parade to end the event. This event has remained commercial-free since 1987 as all items are handmade! Admission is free.

Ideal Coffee:  I deal coffee uses a system where they grade each of their coffee’s for its sustainability factor using four categories they feel contribute to an ideal world. These are; environmentally, socially, politically and economically. You can order your coffee online or stop by the store at 84 Nassau Street in the Market.

Bungalow: Says “We strive to bring our customers an exciting selection of new fashion lines, including B.B.Dakota, It! Jeans, Goorin, Ames Bros., Lady Dutch, Ringspun, & Obey. These stand alongside our hand-picked vintage fashions, from funky to fantastic. And to top it off, we stock our own remade fashions & accessories, one of kind pieces that stand out in a crowd.” Enough said.

The Bread and Circus: Eat, drink laugh and get involved.  The Bread and Cirucs is a one of a kind theatre and food experience.  There are various performances throughout the year.  Check out the website for shows, times and admission prices.

Graffiti’s: Is situated at the center of Kensington Market and is constantly reinventing itself. Graffiti’s represents the true meaning of the word eclectic, representing an area of more than 30 cultural backgrounds.  Stop by for nightly musical performances and unwind with a drink from their good selection of wines and spirits.

La Palette: Is an authentic French cuisine restaurant that makes their food from scratch!  They have a great selection of foods including what could be the best duck in Toronto. Moreover they have a superior selection of beer and wines.  It is best to book ahead on weekends as this place really fills up quickly.

The Patty King: Located at 187 Baldwin Street this place has nailed down the Jamaican patty!  You can also enjoy some great bakery foods as well as good West Indian grub. 416-977-3191.

Sneeky Dee’s: Is located at the corner of Bathurst and College and has the best chicken wings in Toronto!  They also have many daily specials including fajita nights and cheap domestic beers on Wednesday.  Upstairs at Sneeky’s is a venue for musical performance and the joint is usual packed so get there early.

Caribbean Corner: While being in Kensington you cannot miss out on Caribbean Corner.  This little shop has tons to offer in Caribbean, South American and African products. Come by for some super deals and good service.  416-593-0008.

Essence of Life: This shop offers the best in organic groceries, health, and beauty products.  They have knowledgeable staffs that are always willing to help you out in your quest to eat better.
